Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.

Benjamin Franklin

Yes. In other words, being told something is fleeting, being taught something is more memorable but learning something is unforgettable.

Benjamin Franklin’s words, rather tidily define the debates that have surrounded the theory and practice of teaching and is very often used as the motto for the theory of experiential learning. This is perfectly understandable, as although Franklin was self educated and an avid reader, he learnt through experience.

A simple modern example of learning through experience is best demonstrated in learning to drive;

yes there is theory; yes there is teaching; but you actually have to do it to learn.
